The goal of the egg-hatching experiment is to determine the egg production rate (number of eggs produced in 1 day) and the weight specific egg production rate (SEPR, defined as carbon mass of eggs produced over 24 h per carbon mass of female) of Oithona similis during August along a transect from the Barents Sea to the ice covered Polar Ocean. The SEPR can subsequently be used to estimate the copepod production, assuming that female copepods allocate their ingested carbon into egg production rather than into growth. The overall goal of this study is to compare the copepod production along a longitudinal gradient from Atlantic to Arctic conditions as well as between seasons (future cruises to be conducted).
