    Abstract

    Sediment samples for analysis of meiofaunal diversity were taken from box cores. Six layers of the sediment (0-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 cm) were sampled with a 5.5 cm (inner diameter) core. Samples were preserved in 70% ethanol with rose bengal for later analysis and kept at room temperature. This work is part of RF3 of the Nansen Legacy project, cruise SS Q3, August 2019.

    Meiofauna for molecular characterization of diet

    Abstract

    Benthic meiofauna from box core samples were collected in bulk to provide material for identification of diet items through molecular analysis of target taxa. A surface scrape was taken with a spoon in each of three box core replicates. Samples were preserved in plastic bottles in 96% ethanol until analysis. This work contributes to the Nansen Legacy project, RF3 task 3.4.

    Box core samples for analysis of algal pigments (chl a / phaeopigments) in sediment were taken for fluorometric analysis. Eight layers of the sediment (0-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-8, 8-10 cm) were sampled with a 4.7 cm (inner diameter) core and samples were frozen at -20 deg C for later analysis.     Sediment incubations

    Sediment community oxygen consumption were measured from 11.7 cm (inner diameter) sub-cores inserted into box cores. Five replicates were run for each of three treatments: ambient temperature (T1), ambient temperature + 4 deg (T2), ambient temperature plus isotopically enriched algae (T3), ambient temperature + 4 deg plus isotopically enriched algae (T4). This work contributes to the Nansen Legacy project, RF3 task 3.4.
