The SIOS marine infrastructure network was initiated in response to recommendations in the first SESS report, published in 2019. Two of the chapters (Bensi et al & Cottier et al) highlighted the need for closer collaboration between the various owners and operators of marine infrastructures in the Svalbard region. In addition, SIOS-KC has received requests from the marine science community for support to accessing ship time and help to service moorings. The marine infrastructure network was launched in a workshop held 19 November 2020 and organised by SIOS-KC in collaboration with key partners.
The aims of this network are to provide a meeting place for the marine science community in Svalbard to discuss harmonisation of marine data collection, joint projects, sharing of infrastructure and logistics and other forms of collaboration. The network is currently planning its second workshop which will be held 7 December 2021.
