Daan is our new project data officer for POLARIN

Early April our new colleague arrived in Svalbard: Daan Kivits. He will be working with virtual access in the frame of the EU-project POLARIN.

We let him introduce himself:

"My history with Svalbard starts in the fall of 2018, where I participated in the Polar Oceanography and Polar Meteorology & Climate courses at the University centre in Svalbard (UNIS). Even though I quickly fell in love with UNIS and the Arctic environment, I decided to finish my BSc and MSc degrees in meteorology back in the Netherlands at Wageningen University.

During both my thesis (on modelling the European carbon cycle) and internship (on modelling the urban climate) I got acquainted with (pre-)processing large amounts of environmental data and High-Performance Cloud computing. After graduation I continued my research on the European carbon cycle at Wageningen University, with the aim to estimate the contribution of urban anthropogenic CO2 emissions to surface CO2 observations.

Over the next three years, I look forward to supporting polar research by helping researchers to access and interact the data made available through the SIOS data management system, and to work towards an even more integrated polar research infrastructure network by promoting SIOS in the wider scientific community."

Welcome to SIOS, Daan!
