In need of aerial SAR remote sensing data and products in Svalbard?

NORCE and SIOS are currently evaluating the potential use of an L- and X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mounted on the Dornier aircraft in Svalbard.

Lufttransport AS operates a Dornier DO-228 aircraft (LN-LYR) stationed in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. The aircraft is currently equipped with state-of-the art optical instrumentation. The operational use for scientific purposes is administrated by SIOS. In an ongoing project, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre evaluates the potential for complementing the current equipment with an L- and X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)*.

* A SAR is a microwave active sensor that has all-weather, all-day and all-season detection capability, beneficial for maritime surveillance, Search & Rescue, as well as for several marine and terrestrial applications in natural sciences and for environmental monitoring.
