Transport of cargo between Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund

The regular Lufttransport flights between Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund have limited capacity in the cargo hold, which can be a challenge for researchers who need to bring a lot of equipment between the two settlements.

To solve this problem, the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences is offering free transport of cargo and people for SIOS members between Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund two times every summer in 2019, 2020 and 2021. This offer is subject to application by a deadline set each year. For 2019 the application deadline is 15 May. For more information, see the news item from February 2019.

The SIOS logistics service has also teamed up with two local tour operators to offer transport of cargo by boat on regular tourist trips during the summer season

Spitsbergen Guide Service offers transport of items up to 200kg at a cost of 45NOK/kg. They run regular trips on Tuesdays and Fridays from May until September, subject to weather conditions and sufficient bookings. For more information visit

Better Moments offers transport of items up to 1x1x1m in the cargo hold, and larger items on deck (items on deck risk getting sprayed with seawater). They run regular trips on Thursdays and Sundays between May and August, subject to weather conditions and sufficient bookings. The cost will be determined on a case by case basis. This service is offered from quay to quay, which means transport of cargo to and from the boat must be organised seperately.
